Pte Hayes, Paraguay 24 June forest (~30 ft max), not very diverse, heavy underbrush mostly composed of wild- pineapple like legumes, cactus. Almost all brush & tree are spiny. Who browses? few epiphytes (only small bromelias), tho too few vines There are a # of standing death trees but working on them produced no action. Especially where forest is less dense & lot of light comes thru. Numerous decid trees. We found what appears to be a small portion of the cast skin of a snake - a piece 5' long. Immense snake. Sana fox. Lot of procyonids, fox tracks. Deer & pig too. According to Macchi there are 4 kinds of cat. Lions are common, jaguars hardly ever seen any more. Ocelot, rare. "Tigrito" still common. Amazing # of kinds of ants - especially abundant fire ant & atliuo ant. atliuo ant nest to highest hill around - over 1m off the surface & ~17 ft diameter!
