Chaco Experimental Station, 245 km N W Villa Hayes
on Trans Chaco Hwy. Depto. Pte Hayes, Paraguay.
22 June By Km 245, The experimental station, saw a
medium sized mustelid probably a grison,
cross the road. Many road killed foxes -
we saw at least 4 or 5, which seems like many
considering that the nature of the road keeps
auto speed down & that the road has been
closed for several days. Also saw a crested
caracara flying over palm swamp w. a mouse
in its beak.
Arrived at station 4:30 PM. Ing. Marchi
is in charge w. Ing. Samudio of the Ministerio
de agricultura & ganaderia up para visit.
The station has 3000ha, of which 600ha have
been cleared & are lightly grazed. Their main
project now is to experiment a grasses,
attempt to find one which suit the
chaco peculiar soil, that can withstand
grazing, & which provides adequate food
year-round. The soil is an impermeable clay
to a depth of 60cm, which is underlain
by more permeable but very salty material.
Not suitable for farming unless drastic
treatment. The weather is hot & wet during
the summer, & cool-cold (occasional frost) &
drier during the winter. There is ~900mm rain.
