Wayer Phil 1972 Journal 10 Choco Experimental Station, 295 km NW Villa Hayes, on Trans Choco Hwy. Depto. Presidente Hayes, Paraguay. 2 June We crossed the river at about 3 PM. The weather was clear & cool. There has been an unusually severe storm the previous week (ending June 19), & the rd had just reopened. The road is a good clay road, with no rocks, but compared to a dry which dries to a remarkably fine dust. In low places, where the road dries more slow, there were deep ruts, but generally the road was very fine. Little traffic, mostly large cattle trucks. Surrounding lands are wet, & dead flat. Acre & acre of palm swamp broken by laf forest (max alt of tree = 50'). The vegetation of the forest is thick & generally scrubby, with diversity low compared to rain forest. Lots of vines but few other epiphytes. Generally, The place is reminiscent of Middle Florida. We drove until 19 PM. Saw 2 foxes by the road, but were surprised that there was nothing else (dangerous) at km 100. Heard an owl that sounded like a great horned owl. (For this, will see list on June 26). 28 June Land gradually (very gradually) rises as you move inland. % of land under water (palm swamp) goes from above 50% to below 20%
