Journal 13.1 mi E of Itaque on Ituque-San Bernardino road, Central Paraguay June 10-17 a rock surrounded by weeds, mud flaps off & was submerged. Many traps were sprung & dragged, & even when they are set in emergent vegetation the ants usually got the bait (peanut butter, oat or banana). Everywhere deep is sign of large rodent which leaves a platform of clipping 1-1½ ft' across, trails, & piles of cutting. Theodo reported capybaras & nutrias from here. Other animals - block such leaves, swarms of mosquitoes, men fishing & catching what appear to be piranhas, several kinds of frogs (one: Bedo Maracinus). Birds - Phea, red-winged tinamous, whistly herons, black'd turkey vultures, crested caracaras, yellow-headed caracara jacanas, snipe, picci ground daw, monk parakeets, guira cuckoo, gray-billed ani, scissor-tailed flycatcher, campo fleche, horneras & espineros (various kind), bushtide, vermillia, curved flycatcher, white headed marshgrouse white morjita gray morjita, vernillian flycatcher spectacled tyrant, hudson's black tyrant, white billed mockingbird [half]trawl mockingbir, masked yellowthroat screaming cardinal blue-gray tanaga, & red crested cardinal.
