June 10-17
13.1 km E of Yguare and between Ygure & San Bernardino,
Dept. Central Paraguay
This is the foot of Lake Ypacarai, a large
lake E of Asuncion. The rd is a new dirt
rd connecting Yguare & San Bernadino over
the N end of the lake, where the lake drains
into the Rio Salado. The river is poorly
defended here with barely discernable channels.
Most of the feeding streams are little more
than swamp, with emergent vegetation,
mostly tall bunch grass, a thorny legume, &
a malvaceous shrub. The site 13.1 km E of
Yguare is at a ridge over a small stream
of this nature. Two other sites, 14.6 km & 16 km
E of Yguare are slightly higher with a
dense cover of low grass & unipenotals,
camps of stinging bushes. All look as if
it is periodically flooded. The entire swamp
is enclosed by fences & grazed. Nearby
are extensive palm swamps & grassy
savanna, & it is a few miles to drier flat
swamp is bordered by low forested hills.
