Apr 13 Enroute El Mayor
Citellus tereticaudus and saw at least one
Citellus leucurus. Since I am in the second
truck I don't see much beside dust.
Apr 13 El Mayor, Rio Hardy, 30-54, Baja California.
We camped not far from the road, between
the river and the northern end of the Sierra
El Mayor. Beside the camp, and all around
the branched river is lush green vegetation.
Much of it is mesquite. Arriving at 6:30 PM,
there was just time to set out 50 live traps
on the mountain slopes. Saw 4 American
egrete just before we got there, along the
river.
The mountains are mostly slaty shale
with some areas of solid volcanic looking
rock. Vegetation is sparse, with creosote
and a little of other unidentified bushes.
Mosquitos are here! There are also
plenty of gnate. Otherwise it is quite
pleasant.
At dusk we saw numerous Rats,
some quite large, but couldn't manage to
hit any. Saw a horned owl disappear over
the mountain. Earlier heard a cactus wren,
Lila woodpecker, ash-throated flycatcher.
There is a frog croaking down by the river.
a poorwill flew over.
