Chenodophorus hyperythrus
Apr 24 San Fernando Mission, 1500ft, Baja California
Shot one under the mesquites in the valley –
thick growth with cow paths running through
it and the lizard was along one of them. The
area was not far from where the desert of the
hillside met the mesquites, yet near the
extensive ponds with salicornia and salsely.
(see journal) Moved in slow jerky movements
under the brush. Did not run when approached.
May 14 4 mi N La Paz, S.L., Baja Calif.
Saw several on the rocky hillside
here. Each would run a short distance
if much startled, then go about its
business seemingly oblivious of my
presence. They were continually on the
moves, walking with jerky, “nervous”
movements, poking their noses under
rocks, leaves and other objects in rapid
succession, and bobbing their heads here
and there with quick motions.
