Sorex ornatus lagunae
June 11 La Laguna, 6,200 ft., Sierra de la Laguna, Baja Calif.
Had set out 42 Museum Special mouse traps,
baited with walnut along the stream by our
camp on the southwest side of the valley. My
traps were along one side and Dr. Benson's on
the other, all set to catch a shrew if possible,
and at the edge of the water. There were a
number of oaks and other trees along the
banks offering considerable shade. Several
kinds of bushes, particularly a sort of currant,
were close to the waters edge, and there were
many granite rocks in and along the water.
Caught 1♂ in a part which was very
densely wooded and had many leaves on
the ground. The trap was under a small
ledge next to water where it had washed out
a little space. The trap and most of the shrew
were wet when I found it. All were set
very close together, often no more than a foot or
two apart.
