June 22 Santa Rosalilieto, 25+ H., SE end Bahía Concepción
camp under a Palo San Juan
Set out 50 live traps in what might be
called a cardon forest, with many of them
and no other large growth. There was
also pitahaya agria, cholla, ootillos and
some low bushes. The ground was hard
packed sand, some gravelly, and the
whole area heavily overgrazed.
The bats arrived in rather small numbers.
There were Eptesicus and pipistrelles,
none flying until rather late. Then most
seemed to prefer to feed among the cardones.
In one spot, where several grouped together,
I was able to net 18 Eptesicus fuscus.
The pool was about 8x5 feet and with
its surface over 5 feet below the ground.
On one side a ramped down to an edge
blocked off for cattle to drink. Few bats
came to it at dusk, but around 9:00
we found several there. After that one
or two at a time would come every few
minutes. Whether they would have
drunk or not we did not know. Quest
netted 3 Centrozous minor. There was
also occasionally a small bat.
Tonight still a bright moon.
