May 14 4 mi N La Paz, S.L., Baja California
camp, running first up a small draw
and then across a section with numerous
boulders. The distance between traps was
50-60 feet. Among these boulders were a
number of wood rat nests with droppings
present. Set out 7 Schnyders, each in front
of such a nest and baited with both dried
fruit and a few rolled oats.
In the morning I hunted for lizards.
Shot 1 Uta stankeburiana in the sand among
calicornia. Also shot a Uta (*159) which
was unfamiliar but may be nigricanda.
This was well up on the rocky hillside,
flattened against an ironwood branch.
When disturbed it ran along the branch,
than jumped to another. I shot at it and
missed, after which it appeared running
on the trunk of the tree. It made no attempt
to leave the tree. While setting out traps
I shot a Cnemidophorus hypenithrus among
the rocks.
Today I have heard and seen plumbeous
gratcatcher and ash-throated flycatcher,
both on the hillside.
It reached 101° today and now in the
evening is very warm
