Childs 1958 Gavia adamsi 27 May Wainwright, Alaska at 3a.m. at a whaling camp we were thrilled to see a spectacular flight of these magnificent birds. The first flock was composed of about 100 adult birds spread out over about 4 miles. About 10 minutes later another larger group came over calling with a peculiar trilling melodious song much like white-fronted geese. After these two large flights, fewer birds came along. However, the flight continued for most of an hour. They flew over quite low and although many shots were fired by us and the Eskimo none were collected. They are quite arrogant bird, not veering to one side when we moved or oversighting the tent. 12 June Pitherzen River Cape Sabine, Alaska One flew over us on ice headed north. 20 gun 5 king loons flew over the tent at 0900. 24 gun I seen offshore from lagoon.
