Baird Sandpiper
Erolia bairdii
June 10 Point Barrow Alaska
We have seen them daily since arrival. While collecting
on the first ridge, one was taken and a flock of 5 flew
by. They appear to have a buzzing flight song
June 11
They were common between camp and the barrel drop.
The & took had an egg in oviduct + 4 MT follicles - and
a slight brood patch.
June 12 2030. One was seen in a song flight south
of camp twice within a few minutes
June 13
The song flight was heard several times, on the mid
ridge and it is entirely different from that of the
Rectal Sand. The bird flies high in the air
giving a bronzer note constantly, quivering its wings
as if it was flying hard against the wind, and then
drops.
June 14 1600 Frank & I watched one in a display flight of the
south end of LW in which the diameter of the area was at least a third of miles. It chased another
that appeared to be a neighboring individual some distance.
The wing beat is fast while giving a rattling call and
then glides giving the breath note.
June 17 Rose found a nest, clutch of 4, one day wide.
Nest lined with grass, no feathers.
June 18 Both Gil & Rose checked nest today & thought it decent
June 28 Nest behind lab has no eggs now. They were
there 2 days ago
