CHILD'S 1951 Yellow-billed Loon Gavia adamsii Aug 6 East Ammalik, 110 mi SSE Barrow, Alaska Mayer and I came upon a flock of 10 birds of this species on the lake. These birds are very large, making the Pacific loon look small in comparison. They, like the other loons, are very wary and did not allow very close approach. Their call is a melodious who-who-oo-oo sounding like a laugh or a powerful Screech Owl. Several times during our stay we were awakened at night by their calling which came from the river ½ mile away and which sounded as if they were in a puddle behind the wanningan! Aug 20 Point Barrow, Alaska The eskimos have occasionally been seen with these birds, apparently taken inland. We have seen more within the Barrow region proper.
