Calidris canutus
4 June Pitmegea River, Cape Sabine, Alaska
While watching a wolverine from
the top of Wolverine Mt. a pair of knots
came over in a courtship display
flight. It was a beautiful thing with
the typical bat-like flight of shore-
birds accompanied with a
clear melodious song. I collected
me after they separated. The
second was collected several
minutes later when it flushed,
probably from the nest by its
actions, from grass in
a flat area among the tussocks.
5 June Pete saw at least 7 past Wolverine Mt. and
on Cabin Mt.
7 June Pete collected one.
19 June Shot 3 and saw several more on ridge
leading to mountains across river. Two gave a
beautiful flight song and display.
24 June At Mt. behind Lapon we were puzzled by
a call which we could not locate for
a long time. Finally found the birds
to be a knot giving a stunning flight
song very high (500+) and very
difficult to see.
27 June One on 2nd Ridge.
