Lagopus mutus
31 May Litunge Park, Cape Sabine, Alaska
Several pairs were seen on Low Marsh
and West Marsh. I collected the
♀ of one and the ♂ of another pair.
This should not help starting
reproduction in this area. The female
had a fully developed egg in the
oviduct. The mules are still
white but the head feathers are
mottly & brown. They stand out
like a sore that on the Tundra.
A search with binoculars will
show several stochion mounds
or large tussocks. When flushed
they fly straight then up and
down with a guttural croaking
song.
2 June Pete shot a ♂ near the cabin
that was very dirty
4 June Flushed a ♀ from a nest with 9 eggs
on the slope of Carbon Mt.
9 June Males still seen regularly
13 June Males seem to have moved out. They no longer
are obvious, standing on tussocks.
30 June Saw a ♀ near cabin. First time in
a long while. Males gone about 15th
5 July Litunge Park, Cape Sabine, Alaska
Flushed me ♀ - no young seen.
