CHILDS 1951 Willow Ptarmigan Lagopus lagopus Aug 3 East Ounalik, 110 mi SSE Barrow, Alaska Mazin + 9 flushed a cover of 10-12 of their birds while setting the trapline. Eight subsequently were collected. They have been feeding on a berry about ΒΌ" in diam and or willow leaves. All had full crops. Several age groups were taken and one of each put up. Aug 4 Several flushed again today, in the same area Aug 5 An adult was seen with a group of 5 half grown young birds. They appear to keep in the knee-height shrubs which line the taller willows at the stream edge. Here the shrubs are widely spaced and the berries grow upon which they are feeding. Aug 7 I took five today while hunting for Bluethroat and waiting for the plane to arrive.
