Falco peregrinus
20 June Pitmea River, Cape Sabine, Alaska.
A roosty and probable nest site was found
in cliff 2 miles up river. One bird was
seen in distance pursued by Long-tail jaeger!
22 June Cantler could see me nesting in cliff mentioned
above.
27 June Although I did not go to the nest, I could
hear the young calling about 1 mile away. It
sounded like a Raven. Adults not seen.
28 June Drew saw both parents at nest.
29 June I finally got a fair look at these birds and
there is no doubt as to identify as adult
Hawks. The confusion noted above about
the sound was due to the fact that
there is a ravens' nest about 20 away.
Neither parent came close during the several hours
that we were in the vicinity.
10 July One seen along coast to west about 3 miles
15 July Watched an adult falcon fly its way up river
with 2 Long-tail Jaegers in pursuit. The
jaegers seemed to be able to out-maneuver
the hawk with ease and still lodged it.
28 July 20 miles SE Cape Sabine (?) Flushed one along river cut.
23 July 16 min "" "" Found nest about 75' up on river bluff
4 young. Collected 2. 9-hat but not killed. 3 squirrels, several
L.T. jaegers and Goldenplover remains in nest. Species put out
12 miles SE Cape Sabine. Found another nest. One young, not
food identified. Another young dead, found on bluff top. [illegible]
