Falco maticulus
19jun Patnayze River, Cape Sabine, Alaska
Gyrfalcons are nesting on same cliff as
last year in the spot that the raven used.
There were three white young in the nest
about 5 miles long. With care we can
click to the nest. The adult (♀) acted as
they did last year—staying away when
we were near. After circling at a
great distance (2 miles) it landed and
stayed while I climbed to the nest.
Harming parts were around nest and
feather on ridge above.
13July
Returned & try to weight the young birds
There were 4, and they were much bigger
than I thought earlier—8-10". One
remained to stay away.
13July Patnayze River, 16 mi SE Cape Sabine, Alaska
Again one seen near the nest, 5 miles up
the Northfork. One was almost pure white,
with only general line-like stripes at the
ends of the contour feathers. Could not get
close enough to shoot. Could not see the older
for plumage.
20July Patnayze River, 7 mi SE Cape Sabine, Alaska
Pete & I walked the 6 miles down to Falcon Rock and collected
the 4 young (one alive) and the ♂. All were fledged and
could fly well except the live one who must be the
next.
