CHILD'S 1951 COMMON PACIFIC EIDER Somateria mollissima June 28 Point Barrow, Alaska We have seen these species in flocks flying overhead irregularly since arrival. So far we have been unable to distinguish which species Aug. 17 Tom Cain brought in a 5' in eclipse plumage that he picked up along the beach. It had apparently starved to death judging from the condition of the pectoral muscles and the lack of fat. The plumage of the neck + head are remarkably different from the breeding plumage and give the bird an appearance of a white-fronted goose.
