Childs 1958 Gavia stellata 30 may Litwega River, Cape Sabine, Alaska Several seen in flight. Flight call given. 1 Jun Same. Not as abundant as last year. 3 Jun When am came out in the even watched courtship display in a group of 5 birds on the river. It was a most interesting performance. The birds straighten their bodies at about 60° and so only a little white of the breast shows and proceed to race around in this position. At first 3 of the 5 were involved but finally only two did at it. It looked like two head waters racing for a trip! 5 Jun Courtship by 5 on river but did not watch as on my way to trap lines. 7 Jun Pair flushed from pond where they rested last year. 11 Jun Pair flushed from pond in center of loon Marsh several times lately 18 July Litwega River, 7mi SE Cape Sabine, Alaska Shot a g and a Pintail with me shot on a small pond 60x20' ad found that she had a nest with one egg. She had large follicle 30mm so must have just started.
