Gavia stellata
30 may Litwega River, Cape Sabine, Alaska
Several seen in flight. Flight call given.
1 Jun Same. Not as abundant as last year.
3 Jun When am came out in the even
watched courtship display in a
group of 5 birds on the river. It
was a most interesting performance.
The birds straighten their bodies
at about 60° and so only a little
white of the breast shows and
proceed to race around in this
position. At first 3 of the 5 were
involved but finally only two
did at it. It looked like two
head waters racing for a trip!
5 Jun Courtship by 5 on river but did not watch
as on my way to trap lines.
7 Jun Pair flushed from pond where they
rested last year.
11 Jun Pair flushed from pond in center of
loon Marsh several times lately
