Mephitis macroura
May 12 El Roble, 8 mi. N & E Topotitlan de Morelos, Jalisco
On the night of May 11 I was looking at traps after
dark at about 10:00 P.M., when I saw a #7 M. macroura
with his nose under the base of a nopal cactus. I
ran back to camp, about 70 yds. distant, got a
shotgun, ran back and shot the animal 3 times
with #12 shot from 38 col. shells, from the secret
close range. This did not dislodge nor kill the skunk
so I poked him with a short stick. He ran across
the rocks at this and I shot him. After each
shot there was an ejection of scent, but bringing
a light close to him did not seem to cause any
reaction. The country here consisted of open fields,
planted with maize in season, nopal cactus, rocks,
and a few patches of oak trees and low brush.
