Crotogeomys merriami
April 22
8000 ft. Templo de Quetzalcoatl, Piramides de San Juan
Teotihuacan, Mexico. Set out 9 gopher traps late at
night in the moonlight with Senor M. Delgadillo. Took one
immature female. We had much difficulty in telling
the fresh from old mounds at night and also our traps
were too small for this species. Adults that S.B. Benson
and M. Delgadillo took weighed up to 600 grams. The
burrows were very numerous in this region and the
gophers could be seen working in the daytime. The
burrows were 3 to 4 inches in diameter. The soil was
hard and dry at the surface and covered with scant
growth of cactus.
