I set out 85 M. specials and 47 live traps along
2 small streams.
May 8. Took in my traps 10♂, 3♀ Peromyscus melanotis and
2♂, 3♀ Microtus mexicanus. Collected the nest and
eggs of a "Refused-backed" Junco. In the afternoon
we drove toward Morelia in Michoacan, camping
at a very small settlement known as "Macho de
Agua," 10 mi. ESE Zitácuaro. I set out 50
facing
M. specials under high brush on the N slope of
a deep, steep sided gulch. There were a few oaks
and some small alders here, besides much other
brush. I then set about 40 M. specials near
camp on the ridge near pine trees and among
Baccharis sp. and rocks.
May 9 I took 1♂, 1♀ Rheithrodontops fulvescens in my
first 50 traps and 3♂, 1♀ Peromyscus melanotis
in the last 40. In the afternoon we drove on through
Morelia, Michoacan. Yesterday we had crossed a
range of mountains covered with oaks, pines and
firs, but this afternoon after passing Morelia the
country was arid with a sparse covering of Nopal
cactus and brush. Considerable of the land was
cultivated and had large rock fences around
the fields. We camped by one of these, where
I set out 100 M. specials.
