V. Memmler 1941 Pigeon Guillemot May 24, Russian Gulch State Park, Mendocino Co., Calif., Sea Coast on point north of outlet of Russian Gulch streams. 5:30 A.M. Overcast. Several birds seen in flight over ocean to have white wing patches, others must dark. They have a rapid wing beat. 6:00 A.M. 2 Birds observed swimming in a cave thru the rock, both ends opening on the sea. Birds are about the size of a Coot. They have bright red-orange webbed feet and legs. The white patches_ on the wings are large about 2-3 inches long and about 1½" broad. One bird was floating on the water and being carried forward and back by the surging of the sea, Another bird came into view_ from under the water, rose to the surface and flew to a nearby crevasc in the rock. The gave a piercing screeching note at irregular intervals which reached about in the cave.
