Itinerary
May 18, Russian Gulch State Park, Mendocino Co.
California elev. 40 ft. at Camp
But we soon saw them as the road
increased in altitude slightly. Here they
came down even to the waters edge. Red
Alders remain the dominant tree along
the stream which is still close to the
road. Tree and shrubs seen in abundance
were: Tsuga heterophylla, Pseudotsuga taxifolia, Sequoia sempervirens, Abies
grandis, Pinus muricata, Thimble Berry,
Salmon Berry, Scarlet Coast Elderberry,
Cascara Sagrada, Tan Oak. A few
Groseberries and California Laurel were
seen. Of the herbaceous plant the
ferns are most abundant: Sple-finger
fern, Sword Fern, Lady fern and
Broken being very abundant and
Gold-backed fern were at a minimum.
During our walk Josephine discovered a
Triturus sp? in the road which was
quite muddy and full of puddles here,
The skin of the Triturus was very dry
and brown above. Less dry and orange
below. This afternoon Frances and
Mrs. Grinnell and I went up the North
Trail which begins about 200 yds west
of our camp, going up the north canyon
