May 24, Gabilan Range, 1500 ft, 5 1/2 mi. ENE Soledad, Monterey Co., CA
present location.
May 25,
We are staying in a small cabin on the
Hall Ranch. The ranch has fields of barley
and an almond grove. The land is sheped
into rounded hills; where the land is not
cultivated there are grassy slopes with stands
of Adenostoma fasciculatum in the canyons.
Canotus cuneatus is mixed in with the
Adenostoma. There is a blue-grey plant
in great abundance [illegible] mixed with the
grass. This plant is about 4 ft. tall.
Last night I set 25 traps along the margins
of the grass where it met the canyon bottom
stand of Adenostoma. This morning 9 traps
were sprung with no catch, 5 contained
Peromyscus truei (3 q + 2 s all but one q immature),
1 s Reithrodontomyx and 2 s Peromyscus
maniculatus.
Last evening I caught a lizard just outside
the cabin, I believe it is a Uta (see specimen
#166. This afternoon shot 2 Sceloporus.
This morning the following birds were
observed: Jetmouse, Wren-tit, Song Sparrow,
Mourning Dove, Bewick's Wren, Linnet, Thrasher,
Cal. Jay, P. Quail, Turkey Vulture, Spotted Towhee,
Horned Lark, Bush-tit.
The weather has been very warm today.
