Zapus orarius
May 18, Russian creek State Park, Mendocino Co., Calif. elev. 40ft.
A trap was set in a Riparian marginal habitat in the evening and the specimen
was found in the morning. This was one
of 26 traps set. Other catches in the same
line were: 1 Sorex and 6 Peromyscus
maniculatus. Plants included in the
habitat in abundance were Thimble
berry, Salmonberry, Nettle, Blackberry
and Alum Root. The specimen
captured was an adult ♀ and contained
6 embryos in early stages of development.
May 19, Another specimen obtained in a trap
set in a drain leading to a stream.
Another animal had preceded us
however and succeeded in completely
devouring half of the Zapus. The
habitat & plant were the same
as the night before. The ground
was moist on both days.
May 20, 3 ♂ Zapus were caught in a
Riparian marginal habitat in the
same line as set on May 16th.
There were 22 traps set and 7 other
individuals representing 4 other species.
May 22, 1 ♂ Zapus was caught by one of 37 traps
set in a Riparian-marginal habitat.
There were 9 other catches and 3 other sp.
