4 mi. SW Prineville, 3300 ft., Crook Co., Oregon June 19, 1938; (continued) about 700 to 800 ft. I do top of the canyon walls are cliffs called locally rim-rock. I do cliffs vary in height from 100 ft a max to 30 or 40 ft. Below them there is the usual steep rocky slope. On the rim as copious rabbit droppings saw four Cottontails and heard many marmots squeal. I see as also a number of Cat or Coyote droppings here as well as Marmot and Mule deer scat. Saw Prairie falcon, Ash throated flycatcher, Rock wren, chipping sparrow, Lark sparrow, Sage sparrow, mourning dove, Redtailed hawk, and heard Pheasant and quail. Saw absolutely no signs of reptiles. On way back shot at a vulture some 40 yds up.. Heard th shot spatter on its body but it made off. Had used no. 8 shot 16 gage gun. Got a young jack rabbit but was too late getting home to have it broiled with the others. Ate Dipodomys legs and Flicker breast along with rabbits for supper. Dipodomys meat is excellent, it has a fine smooth grain and a delicate flavor. After supper shot at a night hawk which dived over camp. Too high to bring down. Jasper spotted two Antelope within 100 yds of camp we all went out to watch them. The buck snorted nervously and fled off. June 20, 1938 Went into Prineville with Miller and Russell, then headed up crooked river. Above th town the river drops but little and there are numerous marshes and ponds. Expected to find
