Diary
11 mi. W and 7 mi. S Mitchell, 4850 ft., Wheeler Co., Oregon.
(June 16 continued) Camp. Put up my animals and
prepared supper. The meal consisted of stew made
of various woodpeckers, jays, sandpipers, chipmunks,
callospermophila, citellus, and marmot. It was
excellent.
June 17, 1938 Broke camp at 10:00 A.M. took
the Mill Creek Road down to Ochoco reservoir.
On the way down stopped at an old mine and
explored the drift shaft. The first 50 ft. the air
was thick with guano that had been roosting on
the ceiling. The shaft was wet and showed no
signs of bats. At the Ochoco reservoir on the
W side is a small side pool with some large
Rana tadpoles in it. (Bullfrog). There were also
hundreds of Hyla tadpoles. Made several chaps
and found they contains Cladocera and Copepods.
The pool measures some 20x40 ft. and is about
3 ft deep. Possibly it doesn't dry out very often.
Lunched at Pineville and went over to a point
4 mi. S.W of the city. This camp site is among junipers
and is semi arid in nature with a brush cover of
"sabbit bush", Artemisia, sage, and other plants. We
pitched camp. Villa and Russel went to Bend for supplies
and to fetch mail. Set out 50 traps along a lava
ridge among junipers. At five it commenced to
rain continuing to do so all night.
