marshy place 5 miles N of Lucero. Bullrushes and tules thick. Shore bordering marsh is wooded. Lot of poison oak, and nettles and windfalls. Looked ideal for skews but I caught only 2 microtus californicus sap and 1 juvenile which was decaided. (5). June 4 Skinned Microtus and then in company of local boy explored attic of Lucero Hotel. I have bat clusters were found and indications of mice. Collected a number but roof is high and collecting difficult. Returned to auto camp and collected a few lizards for record. Lizards are unusually thick here. Locals say there as several kinds of scelapous, swifts (gopherus), and bluetails (umice). There are also water snakes, racers?, and rattlesnakes about. At noon left by Upper Lake to Ukiah and hiked walk to Fourth Creek some 12 mi. N of Ukiah. A fisherman and Lucero had told us that snakes were unusually common there. I worked the stream for an hour and found none but did take Triturus, Rana (eastern) tadpoles, and redlegs. Also saw turtles and fish but could catch neither. Headed home which we reached about 6:30 P.M. in time to feed the baby.
