General Notes. 1939 Jan 2. 1 mi NW Big Sur, Monterey Co., Calif. above locality. This site is on the river in a dense stand of redwoods beneath which sawing of small lumber has occured. There is a very deep humous and numerous logs and strips of bark lying in the deep shade. On the slopes above are other types of trees. Along the river a mixed association of redwood, lauels, plan trees, alders, etc. exist. It is a beautiful canyon and should prove fruitful for trapping and bird hunting. Salamandra collecting was good especially for ensatina which is the salamander I am after on this trip. Richardson got some good views of his Creepers. At 4.00 P.M. we headed N. A storm has blown up at last and we met rain as far as Monterey. The Roads went as well. I took the Hecker Pass branching off to Morgan Hill. The Road is fast and good with little traffic. Made Berkeley by 8:00 P.M.
