General Notes.
Jan. 1 Sea Cliff State Park, near Soquel, Santa Cruz Co., Calif.
From this point we headed south passing through Santa Cruz at dusk. Past Soquel we turned towards the sea and found this park.
It is a W.P.A. project and not normally opened to camping. We found a point down the beach and set up camp. The sky is half overcast with a 3/4 moon and a fair upper wind but the temperature is very moderate. At 4:30 AM we were awakened by a scourge of hopping sand fleas (Orchestia). We deliberated whether to move our beds up onto the bunding but decided to stick it out. At 5:30 I was awakened by a big sea pouring into my sleeping bag. A second later I was floated several feet towards Richardson. We were retreated leaving me buried in a mass of driftwood.
We decided we would call it a night and then rescued our clothes and outfit making a fire on the bund. A huge sea is up today. Large ground swell making unusually heavy surf. Some waves are coming up farther on the beach than old wave lines of long standing so we don't feel too ashamed of our mishap. The sand fleas, however, should have warned us. After breakfast it became light enough to proceed. We headed for Watsonville along the coast Road.
