General Notes
Dec. 23 Wildcat Canon, 3 mi. NE Berkeley, in Contra Costa Co., Calif.
Walked over hill into Wildcat Canon. Spent
the morning looking for salamanders.
Batrachoseps only were found and sparsely
in the upper part. About 1/2 mile below the
golf course an artificial lake is being built.
All trees in the dry lake bottom have been
removed and bush cut out. It will be
quite a large pond and care is being taken
to see that it lines a cesspool as is the lower
reservoir. Will be interesting to see how
Triturus takes to this new reservoir and
what effect it will have on the lower one.
Afternoon went better. Heard Hyla and
found hibernating sunneess. Caught two
triturus and a number of slender salam-
anders, Ensatina and a few Anides. Got
as far as Camp Alders then walked out.
Microlus seem to be extremely
plentiful this year. Was redtail present
than normally. Green grass coming up
early this year. No sign of active lizards
anywhere yet sun was quite warm. The
woods as well dampened now and will
probably remain so the rest of the season.
See species accounts for more details.
