Nov. 13 began. He also goes on coon hunts and fox hunting using a dog. He had a fox skinned out in poor peltage which he gave us and we found the skull over his back fence. Also got a poor coon skull. He said he would save the skulls he got in the future for us. Claims shooting coyote and bobcat in the vicinity also. He described a kangaroo rat fairly well and says he caught some at his woodpile and kept them alive several months. We have found no trace of them and think the country very poor. Forgot bait so used bread. Peromyscus at least liked it. Went for a hunt N.W. of camp. Found seven Centid, one splendid Eumeces and 3 scelapurus under logs in the oak and pine forest. All were very sluggish and easily caught. Returned home to camp and began skinning (too cold earlier) got this done and decided to break camp and do the rest after supper. Felt we must look hard for good country if we want dipodomy.

Went 1/2 up the Coloma Road from Shingles found a decent valley of grass and chaporal. Good deal of Kelloggii and blue oak and lots of Teyan berry. Set out 100 traps and returned to Shingle where we took an "hut" to sleep in.
