Eldorado Co. 12 mi. W and 4 mi. S Placerville, Eldorado Co., Calif Nov.12. Left Berkeley at 10 A.M., passed through Sacramento at noon, took Highway 50 to Folsom. At a point 15 mi.W and 1 mi. S of Placerville took a look around for Dipodomys signs. Found plenty of pocket gopher workings but nothing else. The country consists of rolling foothills and very rocky soil, bare rock out-croppings are everywhere. The slopes are either grassy or densely covered with chaparral; toyon, manzanita, etc. The grasslands are forested in part by Pinus Sabinianus, Douglas oak, and other oaks. I turned over a rock pile and caught 4 young sceloporus and 2 hyla. Proceeded down the road to "Reservoir" (on the topo. sheets), "American reservoir" on maps but since bought by J.M. Nicols, Shingle, Eldorado Co. it is now called Bass Lake. He has made a resort of it, grows bullfrogs and bass and runs a duck hunting station. Went 1/2 mile down the road and set out 70 traps for dipodomys. Then put out 20 more about camp. Weather clear but cold. Mallards, coots, pelicans, swan was seen on or near the lake. Nov.13 Picked up traps shunned entire catch except for 1 griv. male peromyscus. Nicols makes a practice of shooting all fish predators. Behind his rock fence are carcasses of blue and white
