Clethrionomys
11 mi. W and 7 mi. S Mitchell, 4850 ft., Wheeler Co., Oregon.
June 10, 1938 , Caught three in a closed set
wood of white fir and Douglas fir. Averaged
1 per every 10 traps. The ones caught were
under old rotten logs where the disintegrated
wood had packed down somewhat. In general
the localities were dampish and shaded. They
had all eaten of the bait. The ears were
parasitized by a small orange mite. These
were thick and looked like mildew. One
female had 8 small embryos.
June 11.
They are not really common here and are
apparently rather widely but evenly dispersed.
Usually average 1 per 10 traps. All specimens caught
have the "orange scale". Last night while setting traps
was very much doubtful about the catch. The
woods were more open but of the same trees, Douglas
fir, White fir, Yellow Pine, and occasional Larch.
The mice were in essentially the same places, not
too dry regions under logs adjacent to more
complicated system of cover. The mice again had
all been at the oatmeal bait.
