After breakfast went across the River to the east side and worked downstream. Columbines in full bloom and plenty of Solomon's seal. In Lodgepole belt at foot of river "Bank" found Columbian Ground squirrel. Further down stream Callospermophila and Oregon ground squirrel were fairly plentiful. Few Chipmunks on this side. Spotted some rock outcappings where Woodrats had one been, no fresh droppings. Bears markings in stream. Began raining about ten and Scirride disappeared. Started back to camp saw Goshawk flying along opposite shore. Spent afternoon skinning. Set out 50 traps and 10 rat traps along the river below camp. Set rat traps in rock outcroppings and among Columbian Ground squirrel workings.

Besides the cataloged animals picked up 10 peromyscus, mostly juveniles; 9 en males. Miller reports that there is an excellent sidestream of Camp, Elk Creek, which has dense growth of fern about it. Spent the day skinning. Had little time for explaining, rained intermittently, mosquitoes very few. Set out 75 traps up Elk Creek to its fork. Plenty of Russel backed thrush up the way. Whitthr owl in very close. I flushed two deer. Stream is more banked and has thickets and lush vegetation on its banks, Seems like an excellent site for water skrews. N.of Elk Creek is an open forest of Yellow Pines. Chipmunks exceedingly common here. Many deer trails present also.
