Marshall, 1946 July 29-Aug 1, San Bernardino Mts., Calif. yds. away. A jw. seen near Jenkins Lake in Yellow Pine belt Aug 1. Acan Woodpecker Through- yellow pine belt up to about 7500 ft. High on tops yellow pines. Jenkins Lake Aug 1. Colaptes Abundant through range of Jeffrey & yellow pine, at least to 8000 ft. Sayornis nigricans About 5 jw's. at Dry Lake foraging around edges close to water. 1 taken, prepared, & skin destroyed by mice: A jw July 30, 1946 Dry L. 9000 ft. tests 1.7mm. some fat, sm. dragon flies (damselflies) not beginning molt. Olive-sided Flycatcher & Wood Pewee - most conspicuous birds - everywhere & calling, up to 10000 ft (see ger. acct). I was amazed at the abundance and scattering of these birds. They make spectacular long insect-flight when in steep surroundings. Empidonax wrighti Fairly common - usually up in pines. Through Yellow Pine - black oak asso. (Jenkins). up to 9500 ft in lodgepole pines where scarce.) Apparently a downward movement.
