July 28 Chilo, San Gabriel mts., L.A. Co., Calif.
About 6000 ft up. Large grove (about 1½-2 sq. miles in extent) P. ponderosa. Open stand on dry boulder strewn fairly flat rolling country. Pines & Artemisia tridentata. Gray squirrels & Enthusis & Coyotes abundant. Latter howling all night & made circuit of camp.
W. Bluebirds, Chipping Sparrows, Juncos, chickadees Steller Jays, Pigmy & Wh-ls. Wuthatches the predom. birds. Noted a few Incense cedars. Found no owl nor pooinills in evening. Sighted several deer. Looks like favorable Otus flammeus country but doubtless too late in season to expect them to call.
July 29-August 1 S.Fk. Santa Ana R., San Bernardino mts, Cal. From Jerks Lake up Santa Ana on 29th. To Dry lake 30th. Dollar L. 31st & up to Dollar Pass, back to Santa Ana R & Dry Lake; Back to Jerks L. on Aug 1st.
Main observation was entire lack of any breeding activity (no snow left) no birds in song except a x rarely a fox sparrow or green-tailed towhee. Gt. movements & scattering of birds which seems to have carried many boreal birds down & many W.S & trans.
