Marshall 1946 July 25' out Lowe to Barley Flats, Angeles Forest, L.A. Co., Calif. in area of old Mt. Lowe Tavern. AM at Lowe Tavern: spring attracted Hummers, Arkansas Goldfinches, Juncos etc. Canyon Wrens singing - rocky area . Mt. Grand. Pseudstones; Olive-sided Flycatchers, Vireos, solitary & walking Vireos, Bald-tailed Pigeons. Chickadees, Steller Jays, Grey Squirrels - tanagers. Canyon Live Oakes (set up out) upper Sonoran assortment both toulges; Wrentit Titmouse Black-throated Grey Warblers! Berwick Wren, etc. Many Hummers 3rd Prominent Association was Manganese chaparral on S-facing slopes - Entemias common. saw an Empidonax on E side Mt. Lowe - exclusively dry stunted oaks & manganese chaparral. Could have been a Wrights (?) Olive-sided Flycatcher, & Pewee the conpic. bds. all day. Everywhere where there are high perches, from 1st Pstrings on up. Barley Flats at noon. Small patch Pinus ponderosa & P. coulteri on grassy ridge. Purple Martins & Pygmy Nuthatches abundant also w/Bluebirds Chickadees, Violet-gs.?(a tree) Swallows. College wip Screech Owl in daytime & it was mobbed by White-crested Nuthatch etc. Juncos, one Martin dor at me's side & Desert Quail Clipping Sparrows common thruat this trip. Muttall Woodpeckers found wherever one or more trees
