Marshall, 1946 July 24 Lone Tree Trail to Mt. Lowe, L.G. Co., Caly. On N-facing slopes straggling Pseudotsuga above 2000 ft. Scrub oaks in some maples in ravines. Several family (?) groups of Black-chinned Sparrows in lower (Lidenostoma) zone. Set up owl & called scr. Owl notes to attract them. A real ♂ "" answered from ravine far down mt. Kept up for over ½ hr. Heard this in afternoon. Also heard Pygmy Owl whistle several times from distant canyon where a few Pseudotsuga. I gave imitated calls & got many birds, ground owl & pair Nymphalins. Not-quail also answer the call. Almost on summit of 1st range found a rattler which went across trail & climbed about 3 ft up in a bush, & coiled itself around the twigs. Seemed perfectly at home in the dense twiggy & glided around with ease. At dusk heard Pygmy Owl near at hand on N side 1st ridge where numerous Pseudotsuga stand above the dense 20' high growth Canyon Live Oak. Also ♂ Scream Owl highly territorial at same place & Smith & jims following him & uttering food calls. Horned Owl in distance hooted for a while. No other owls called up in dense Pseudots. forest.
