Marshall, 1946 July 20 Altadena, LA Co., Calif. whistles several times. saw some of us others heard or seen. This & poor will is molting. Was squating in dust of old road thru chaparral & stayed around same area all evening until collected. Perched in places on the road all within 150yds. July 21 Foothills N. Altadena (Rubio Canyon Area) LA Co. Calif. Started same place as last night. Saw a black-chinned hummer in the larksprings. Saw my 1st black-chinned sparrows on steep dry hills covered with Adenostoma. Slight "trip" notes kept individuals in touch (1st 2, then more associated). As I progressed they kept above & ahead of me & more joined them. Would spend much time quietly perched on outside of large bushes in plain sight. Would scatter & forage on ground & proceed rapidly thru the brush. One came almost to me in a steep shaded gulley - seemed to be looking for water. Approx 6 birds in this loose flock seeming to be definitely centered on brush of a steep slope above Camp Huntington. Hiked up Edison Rd. high on mt. noticed Nuttall Woodpeckers wherever a sizable tree. Great aggregation of highly territorial & fighting hummers
