Marshall, 1946 General Account June 25 Redwood Peak, Contra Costa Co., Calif. afternoon. Hiked up canyon of 2nd growth redwood from Joagain Miller park to Redwood Park. Noted many r-b. Thrushes, Cyanocitta, Purple Finches, At summit of ridge where prickly pears are spread along Skyline Blvd there are Monterey Pines & Cypress planted. Here an olive-sided flycatcher, red-breasted nuthatch. Trail SE of Redwood Peak goes out into Brushland where heard a hermit thrush singing. Proved to be in a brushy gully where a few sm. redwoods (1 ft diam.), madrones, buckeyes, oaks, dense brush & vines. Saw the singing of another ad (while I was singing) and juv in full grown plumage - all called up at various times by screech out note. Trail swung around to NE side redwood mt where large 2nd growth redwoods appeared with clear forest floor except for low ferns & greenery. Here saw one Chestnut backed Chickadee, many W. Flycatchers, buton vireos, Verdelares, Brush Tits Cyanocitta noted. In deep shaded stream canyon saw a pair (one ad &1) W. Tanagers in redwoods - high.
