Marshall, 1948 Melopis 151 April 18 Solano Co. uplands Calif. of birds along Green Valley & Suisun creeks. When latter enters hills - up to Curry Lake & Mr. Chadbornes Farm, few birds, older succession ( Laurel Alder). Only one bird found, a # singing at Mr. Chadbornes bridge. Found no frulella either. At Curry Lake went for trip in motorboat, saw an Osprey & ad Bald Eagle. Both have been around a long time, eagle has a mate in all brown plumage which we didn't see. Osprey screams when flushed. They always use same perch - Osprey in dead snag at water's edge by dam, Eagles in Oak or little groggy knoll sticking out into lake. Keepers said Eagles chase ducks & geese, saw Osprey with huge fish. Osprey spends almost all it's time sitting on snag, is more wary than eagles. Or evening is always chased by Night Herons. Went to Lake Hernann - song sparrows abundant in Salix, 3 S. olneyi & Typha at stream inlet. Saw pair alarmed about nest. Heard & saw many more. Note S. olneyi growing in fresh water stream! Conclusions: Song Sparrows have migrated en masse from an unknown wintering ground back to Lake Hernan, Green Valley Creek & Suisun Creek, already well established, paired, territories set up. Have not penetrated marginal habitats in hills except the 1 at Chadbornes - Their absence thurlest winter not indicative.
