Melospiza
April 18 Solano County upland habitat. Covered same localities as on pp 141 & 142 of these notes. (Stoner correspondence had found birds absent from Lake Hermann last November - creek entrance dried ups.) Stoner went along. 1st saw a goaldi at Benicia in Fennel, across st from Faeniculum-Typha area where there were redwings - this is at corner of W end & block where Stoner lives. None known previously from Benicia. Went to Green Valley Creek area. No song sparrows, no chickadees, no creepers. This is marginal SS habitat - getting too shaded by oaks, laurels, alders.
Downstream couple miles where strea crosses E-W road were plenty birds along willows & in patch Heaclum & junius. M here had several ten, sang, and chased out fishwells, they retreated to grass fields. None present here last winter. Saw & heard about 5 birds - i.e. in normal abundance - examined with binocs & were goaldi.
Then went to Swiss Creek, found M's singing & pairs established in normal nos. at all places roles we stopped last Oct & several more. Pairs giving alarm notes, etc., all typical goaldi, plenty of water in creek. 50-60yds between pairs according to veg. Rare in shallow places where willow scrub growing ongoing! but & acasionally smegt by high water. None in places where oaks or other tall trees. Most where willows occasional & good patches Heaclum & vines. There has been a wholesale influx
