Marshall 1948 Melospiza April 11 Walnut Creek, Contra Costa Co., Calif. Last pair on far side of last bridge (upper arrow) in patch of Typha about 30 x 20 yds. Didn't sing but gave alarm note when I sang. Watch foraging. One would ascent Typha stems picking insects off stem like a nutbatches 12:15-45 Return trip upstream - same birds except 2 9 & possible twittering pair. Pair at 0 yards in Typha, 9 at 50 yds, (Twittering was at 270 yds - couldn't find birds), 590 yds (place where 9 singing on 1st trip), 747 yds RR bridge, 840 yds 9 & 9 answered, Seipus Corvinus Setiv. 1350 yds road. This makes pair, 9, 9, pair or representing 4 territories in 1350 yds or a pair every 340 yards. Only a pair and a 9 were in portion covered last fall when stream was dry (see p. 132). There probably accidental, or spread up line from further downstream, or arrows with gardens of residences which are now being built up. I examined these birds closely & found they were just twittering races. (Plenty crowned sparrows, 9 lincolns and Fox Sparrows here)
