Marshall 1947 Melopiza Collections Sept-Oct '47 Miller Creek 2 1/2 mi W St Vincent Station Marin Co. Caldali (See Petaluma Quadrangle) hiked upstream from here Typha marsh Lucas Valley Road willows willows St Vincent Station Marin Co. Hospital open willow pockets birds noisy & common laural etc big trees little undergrowth Dixie School salt marsh See census made in spring '47 (pp 86-88) 3829-3838 coll along here in order proceeding upstream. There were no birds downstream from 3829 because stream veg is all grazed by cattle & sheep & much of trees cut down. From 3829 to near Marin Co hospital there are very few birds, about 10 only in 1400 yards. 2 causes - too dense overstory of tall trees, laural & oak; blackberry, Polygonum brush limited to little patches by grazing, 100yds apart or so. Usually find a bird where a little brush, however. Was one little patch of Typha, nettles, etc with 3 birds. Bd's amazingly shy along here - windy - (none called except once or twice for a couple) - coll only by seeing them: a) standing perfectly still under blackberry thicket ( saw the spotted chest); b) moving among roots of laural on stream bank (like Canyon Wren) c) flushed from little patches Polygonum. Stream has water - probably permanent. Probably no birds downstream until St Vincent School. Upstream are plenty in open willow growth at Hospital & looks like OK habitat upstream from there. Stream dries up below here & has no brush at all. 3500 12230
