Marshall, 1947 Melospiza Collections Sept Oct '47 /32. ( See Concord quadrangle) Walnut Creek, 3 mi due E Lafayette Ridge Contra Costa Co. Calif - Has constraining high artificial banks with growth Elder, Willows, Blackberry, Box Elder, Rose. Some typha grass in bottom. There is running water very foul. Birds widely spaced, usually 2 or 3 together. Some Laurel & Oak but plenty open. Collected 7 birds along 1100 yds here. Saw about 4 more. 3799-3803 Walnut Creek Lake (one pair in Polygonum) Lafayette Creek walked about a mile along creek here. Is dry. No birds. Plenty Salix, open type. Dry Typha patches. San Ramon Creek Tributary of Walnut Creek (at RR bridge) 3 1/4 mi due N Las Trampas Peak Contra Costa Co. Col. 3 birds here (saw 1 more). An open stream, no Laurel or oak. Mostly low Salix + patches Typha, just right for Song Sparrows. Has running water in it which is let out of Lafayette Reservoir. Birds scarce - must dry up sometimes.
