Marshall, 1947 Melospiza Collections Sept-Oct '47 (see San Mateo Quadrangle) Merced Lake Fringe of Soripus californicus grows all around edge of lake. S. end Lake Merced, San Mateo Co., Calif. level field of grass, Corium, dock Dense growth willows 25' with understory of Blackberry - 5 birds coll. here 3807 - 3811 They were in loose flocks with lincoln sparrows (10♂), Fox Sparrows (8♀) Crowned Sparrows (dozens), fisherella song sparrows (saw at least 2, they gave peculiar "chuck" call ~ fox sparrows) These flocks were out in the field 50 yds from willow patch, but would return to willows occasionally en masse. About a dozen santacruces must have been in this area. Birds abs avoided interior of dense willow patch. Pacific Ocean Mussel Rocks Milagra Valley Skyline Hiway E Mussel Rock, San Mateo Co. A rather natural habitat of less dense baccharis, junceus, Corium, Heracleum & many smaller springy plants quite like seaside chaparral. Birds very abundant - with crowned + lincoln sparrows, and away from water. Saw about 12 birds in 100 yds. Seems a very moiste habitat. Was a little patch of typha there also. 130.
