Marshall, 1947 MeloSpiza melodia Aug 2 Avon, Contra Costa Co., Calif. had the regular natural Sagoon Bay habitat of Scirpus acutus, olneyi & campestriis, with some small Typha too. All the Song Sparrows were restricted to within 20 yds (often less) of the water in the natural habitat of the slough - marsh - namely the Scirpus & Typha as stated. Some occasionally went into the Baccharis growing on the raised dry artificial bank a few yards or from the water, but most were confined to chunks of Tall S. acutus & often & could find zone in areas where only the smaller Scirpus prevailed. SS very quiet seldom seen or heard. Heard one group all giving alarm notes & one sang free - this about noon. So many came around (about 5 or 6) in this one spot that I figure they are pretty common but just not in evidence now during the molt. No indic of any wandering away from habitati
